SATISFACTION AT LAST
NEUROPSYCHOANALYSIS ON SEX, DRIVE AND ENJOYMENT

What is the standing of Freudian theory in the light of modern neuroscience when it comes to drives, pleasure, enjoyment, and sex? To date, neuropsychoanalysis might be seen as a rather desexualized body of theories, studies, and methods: sexual topics pop up here and there, but not in any systematic way that recognizes sexuality as a constitutive foundation of the human condition. This congress aims to rectify this impression by directing our attention to questions like:

What is sex? What is libido? What is an erogenous zone?
Do we have to reconsider the Freudian notion of infantile sexuality?
What about affect, emotion and drive in the sexual act and in sexuality?
Are we enslaved to love? What is the role played by reward in love, addiction, or sex?
What can we say about the role of the object in the sexual act and in sexuality: partial, transitional, sublime, exquisite – including lost objects?
Are there specific (neuroscientific, conceptual, clinical) reasons to distinguish feminine enjoyment?
The Congress will take inspiration from Freud’s notion of the “experience of satisfaction” as well as from various post-Freudian notions, such as the prominent place given by Lacan to enjoyment (Jouissance) in relation to human subjectivity. Thus, we might ask:

Is Freud’s interpretation of the experience of satisfaction still tenable, more than a century later? Do we need to revisit the relation between needs, libido, drive, and desire in light of current neuroscientific findings?
What about the relation between Freud’s repetition compulsion and Lacan’s jouissance in the light of modern neurosciences?
How do we conceive of death drive in this discussion?
What (neuroscientific) grounds are there for the introduction of multiple forms of enjoyment, as Lacan’s work suggests: phallic enjoyment, “autre jouissance,” surplus enjoyment (“plus-déjouir”)?
What about the idea of a sexual relationship, of which Lacan states that there is no such thing (“Il n’y a pas de rapport sexuel”)?

Psychoanalytic theory and practice both have a part to play in addressing the question of ‘the feminine’. Our goal for this Congress is to focus on issues that affect the everyday life and experiences of both women and men.

Since the late nineteenth century, concerns and problems related to the female condition, which were previously normalised or silenced, have become increasingly visible in different cultures.

Psychoanalytic theories on the feminine have widened and diversified. Important debates emerged early on, such as the Freud-Jones controversy on primary and secondary femininity, and the role of penis envy in development. Many female analysts developed and presented their ideas on these issues. These debates are ongoing and have become increasingly sophisticated. The riddle of bisexuality has stood at the centre of psychoanalysis since the beginning and contains both the feminine and the masculine. The question of whether there is a set of fantasies that are connected more with the feminine than with the masculine remains open.

Each society, culture or historical period attributes certain behaviours to the feminine or the masculine. However, most people have their own personal mixture of these, and it would be an over-simplification to prescribe a fixed set of properties to one particular sex. The psychoanalytic approach is now broader, including the feminine within the field of the masculine. New family configurations and sexual and gender diversity have challenged established standards of sexual binarism and have invited new questions about femininity and masculinity. The feminine protects the infant and its development; it guarantees survival and furnishes the mother tongue. In the intermediary spaces of two, three or more persons, all the involved persons continuously negotiate the positions of the feminine and the masculine, changing the question of what should be labelled as feminine and what as masculine. We have therefore had to revisit many concepts whose relevance for clinical practice is unquestionable: among them, the Oedipal-castration complex and its traditional resolution, the feminine superego, and women’s desire for children.

Within this framework, the IPA takes up the challenge of updating and rethinking classical psychoanalytic views on the feminine and their repercussions in psychoanalysis.

The Fifth Annual School of the EPI
28th July – 3rd of August 2019, Paris
Preliminary Announcement
We are very pleased to confirm that  the EPI fifth “integration” annual School “The Pleasure Principle… and Beyond” will be taking place in Paris from the 28 th July (arrival) till 3rd of August (departure) 2019.   This School is being organized by the European Psychoanalytical Institute together with the Paris Psychoanalytical Society (La Société Psychanalytique de Paris – S.P.P) in collaboration with the French Psychoanalytical Society (L’Association Psychanalytique de France – A.P.F.) and the Psychoanalytic Society of Research and Education (La Société Psychanalytique de Recherche et de Formation – S.P.R.F.).

The theme “The Pleasure Principle… and Beyond” will be tackled from different perspectives by the invited speakers and discussants. We believe the School with the everyday plenary lectures and invited discussions, small clinical groups, workshops, a film screening and discussion, as well as other interesting social events will become an remarkable further step in building bridges and maintaining constructive dialogue between different psychoanalytic cultures. It will be an excellent opportunity for exchange, debates and for learning about and from a deeply rooted in history and dynamically developing psychoanalytic culture of contemporary France and, of course, of learning from each other, from our differences as well as from our shared ideas and grounds.

This year the TSR-D seminar (only for EPI candidates belonging the TSR-D class) will be organized before the core School-program on the 27th/28th of July, 2019.

There will be also a special evening program on Child and Adolescent psychoanalysis for the preregistered class of the trainees.

The registration will be open in due time. As usually we anticipate a heavy demand for places from potentially interested participants belonging to different European Societies and Study Groups. For this reason and also because the annual School is now the only meeting point for the EPI candidates, registered analysands and members with the Institute’s board and faculty you are strongly recommended not only to reserve the dates, but also to book your place quickly after you receive the information letter from the School’s organizing committee.

Task Authority Organisation

There is now wide recognition that group and systems psychodynamics play a vital part in the success or failure of work projects and organisational change. Likewise, the understanding and management of feelings, tensions and other dynamics in group situations are essential to effective leadership and followership.

Timothy Gallwey, author of The Inner Game of Work says,

“You must declare yourself to be a learner during your working hours as well as a doer. After that, you must pay attention to the teacher – experience itself.”

The Leicester Conference is a 14-day experiential learning event. It is residential and provides space to reflect and contemplate on how you lead and follow in your organisation, your community, indeed, how you lead and follow in your life! The conference has taken place every year since 1957 and is the flagship of all the other Group Relations conferences and institutions around the world. It is only for those who are deeply invested in understanding their relationship to leadership and authority in complex, uncertain contexts. It is the home of learning by experience.

Learning for Leadership
The Leicester Conference involves discovering ourselves in new ways and relating to our context and its contents a-fresh. It opens up vistas from which we can navigate new directions through previously unseen pathways, and thereby arrive at a new realm of possibility and potential, where earlier we only saw thickets, dead ends and hopelessness. Participants at Group Relations conferences consistently report their learning to be “life changing”.  The learning is subtle and enduring long beyond its initial intensity during the conference itself.

Learning through Experience
As a learning modality, it is completely experiential, there are no lectures, presentations or powerpoint slides. What is provided at a Group Relations Conference is unique, in CPD terms. Unlike many other programmes where the learning outcomes are specified in advance, (the “what you will learn” and the “how you will learn it”), at the Leicester Conference, the learning emerges, and it is available to you in as much or as little as you are able to take from the opportunity. It is not a conference as we think of it, the Leicester Conference is a temporary Institution in which to study the exercise of authority.

The conference
As an organisation, it has a Director and a staff team who work collaboratively with the members on the dynamics of leading and following within the boundary of the conference main task. As the members encounter the staff – all of whom are appointed by the Director, we hypothesise that the thoughts, feelings and ideas about the staff: member relationships, as well as member: member relationships mirror the dynamics from our lives – and are driven by deep patterns related to childhood (or earlier) authority figures. The conference is a safe space where we can study those feelings, thoughts and assumptions; test them, and find new ways to work in, with or around them.

What does it involve?
There are Small Groups, Large Groups, and an inter-group event as well as an event that seeks to study the role of the psychophysical in the context of authorisation.  In the second week, there is an institutional event about relationships between parts/wholes and managing differentials of power and influence. There are informal spaces for reflection, digestion and journaling. Plenaries and Review & Application groups provide the space to make sense of the conference experience, and to think about how learning in the conference may be translated into the roles we hold outside of the conference. Unlike our ceaseless world, there is a rhythm to the conference that in itself is a learning opportunity.

The Here and Now
Wilfred Bion is often quoted as encouraging analysts to work “without memory and desire”. The notion of working in the “here and now” provides opportunities to explore what it really means to be present to what is actually going on. So much of our waking life is spent drifting off into ideas of certainty, asserting that we really know what is going on, or into dreams of what we hope is really going on: sitting patiently between those two poles is, what is (or could be) really going on. Learning to be with what emerges is a wonderful learning opportunity that political, social and corporate leaders need now more than ever.

Becoming a Learner
Returning to Timothy Gallwey, and The Inner Game of Work – he says that, after we have declared ourselves as learners we become teachable.  After Leicester, we return to our organisations ready to listen in new ways,

“….. the customer will teach us how to sell, the subordinate will teach us how to manage, the followers will teach us how to lead, and every project will teach us how to optimise our work.”

As if he had taken part in a Leicester Conference Gallwey says,

“This seminar of experience has an open door policy. You can enter and exit when you choose. When you enter and pay attention as a student, the learning process begins.  You start from your present understanding and move at your own pace. But if you get so involved in the drama and the trauma of work that you forget you are a student, the seminar goes on without you. It waits patiently for your return, always granting the freedom to be conscious or unconscious, to pay attention or not. And the variety of courses to enrol in is nearly unlimited.”

However, there is only one Leicester Conference and it waits patiently for your attendance.

Lezione aperta
“Genetica e modelli sperimentali nello studio dei processi cognitivi normali e patologici” (Dott. Mattia Ferro).

Programm folgt in Kürze. Mit Beiträgen von: Dr. Wolfgang Schmidbauer, Univ.-Prof. Dr. Alfred Pritz (Rektor der SFU), Univ.-Prof. Mag. Dr. Gerhard Benetka und vielen mehr.
