Modernism, creativity, the freedom to grow as a “free and self-reliant human being” – with these beliefs, Anna Freud, the youngest daughter of Sigmund Freud, and Dorothy Tiffany Burlingham, the youngest daughter of the great American artist Louis Comfort Tiffany, founded Vienna’s Hietzing School.

To Erik H. Erikson who taught there, it was “the best possible school” and today its true significance, as both the teachers and the students remember it, comes to life in a dynamic new exhibit at the Freud Museum London.

Four historic photographs of Sigmund Freud are on view for the first time, along with original paintings and over 75 vintage pictures from private collections in Europe and America. Notable drawings, manuscripts and autographs make vivid the founders’ vision of the Hietzing School’s origins and sequels, its day-to-day experience and its enduring influence on our understanding of education and the developing mind.

The Freud Museum thanks the Botsiber Institute for Austrian-American Studies, the Zukunftsfond of the Republic of Austria, and the Anna Freud Foundation for their support.

International Workshop „The Making of Sexuality“
Public Event: Freud and the Sexual
Presentation by Teresa de Lauretis (USA), followed by a Conversation with Frauke Berndt.

To introduce the discussion of her book Freud’s Drive: Psychoanalysis, Literature and Film (2008), Teresa de Lauretis will give a brief account of the relevance of Freudian metapsychology to her research over the years in areas such as semiotic and textual analysis, gender and postcolonial studies, feminist, lesbian and queer theory. She will then present Jean Laplanche’s term “le sexual”, derived from Freud’s conception of infantile sexuality, as preliminary to Laplanche’s own theory of the co-presence, in adults, of a sexualité
pulsionnelle and a sexualité instinctuelle that may act both together and in conflict.

Teresa de Lauretis is Distinguished Professor Emerita of the History of Consciousness at the University of California, Santa Cruz. She has written on cinema, semiotics, psychoanalysis, literature and feminist theory. Her books include Alice Doesn’t (1984), Feminist Studies/Critical Studies (Ed. 1986, 1988), Technologies of Gender (1987), The Practice of Love (1994), Soggetti eccentrici (1999),
Figures of Resistance (2007), and Freud’s Drive (2008, 2010). Since her retirement, she has been lecturing and conducting seminars in Europe and Latin America. In 2017 she is Visiting Professor at the JFK Institute of the Freie Universität Berlin. She is currently working toward a theory of reading and spectatorship based on figurality and the psychoanalytic concepts of transference, seduction, and translation.
