Call for Expressions of Interest in Participation
Following the successes of our previous events, this conference will develop further conversations about the relationships and tensions between psychoanalysis and education. We are keen to invite submissions to participate that involve both psychoanalytic theory and accounts of psychoanalytic practice (where applicable), and we define education in its widest context. We hope to welcome academic staff, teaching staff in other areas of practice, and of course colleagues working primarily in clinical settings.

The themes of this conference are Creativity, Psychoanalysis and Lifelong Learning. We encourage interested parties to consider these themes and to interpret them in ways that lend themselves to original and provocative ways of thinking. Queries are welcomed in the first instance, and when you are ready to submit, you will be asked to do so in one of a variety of formats. We will welcome traditional presentations and workshops (and please indicate which you are proposing). However, we are also keen to encourage less traditional formats of collaboration. As one of the conference themes is creativity, expressions of interest that propose a creative space in the conference are warmly welcomed. For example, colleagues might consider a performance, something musical, a piece of artwork, film or fictional writing.

What does psychoanalysis do when faced with somebody who presents with addiction? This workshop will consider what psychoanalysis brings to the field of addiction, bearing in mind that the founding scene of psychoanalysis is a repression of Freud’s addiction. Freud underwent disfigurement and died as a result of a nicotine addiction. Does this warrant consideration in what a psychoanalytic approach to addiction might look like? The current political idiom is ‘building recovery capital’. Is this what psychoanalysis wants to sign up to? Can psychoanalysis be a cure to addiction and/or should the analyst consider a partnership approach with addiction services? In considering these questions we will also consider what those struggling to become free of a life consumed by addiction use as coping strategies, teaching and support.

Dr Eric Harper is a psychotherapist, social worker and human rights activist, currently working in London with homeless persons presenting with both mental health and addiction challenges. Prior to this he managed a Mental Health Crisis Centre and Drug and Alcohol structured day rehab program. He has worked in Africa and the USA with war trauma and torture survivors and also assisted with the founding of the African Sex Worker Health and Human Rights Alliance.
